Team & Business Unit Overview

The Windows + Devices (W+D) Fundamentals engineering team at Microsoft is responsible for core OS reliability, hardware compatibility, system performance, battery life optimization, and environmental sustainability across the entire Windows PC ecosystem.

As advances in AI hardware silicon (NPUs, SOCs) and system software create new engineering opportunities, this team builds low-level OS optimizations, profiling tools, and telemetry engines that ensure Windows PC devices deliver peak performance and battery efficiency.

Role Summary & Key Responsibilities

System Optimization & Low-Level Engineering

  • Telemetry & Trace Analysis: Analyze large-scale system telemetry, ETW (Event Tracing for Windows) logs, and system crash dumps with senior guidance.
  • Kernel & OS Optimization: Identify performance bottlenecks across operating system modules, driver layers, and application interfaces to optimize CPU, GPU, memory, and battery usage.
  • Code Implementation: Write, test, and maintain high-performance system code using modern C++, C, C#, or Python.

Engineering Quality & Infrastructure

  • Debugging & Diagnostics: Use advanced Windows debugging tools (WinDbg, Windows Performance Analyzer / WPA) to isolate system instabilities and latency spikes.
  • Data-Driven Validation: Leverage cloud telemetry platforms to run A/B performance experiments and measure empirical gains across live hardware devices.
  • Security & Governance: Pass mandatory security compliance checks, including the biannual Microsoft Cloud Background Check.

Minimum & Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Programming Skills: Strong programming foundations in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Security Requirement: Ability to clear mandatory background checks (including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Systems Programming: Coursework, project experience, or internships in Operating Systems, System Architecture, or Low-Level Programming.
  • Windows & Performance Tools: Familiarity with Windows internals, memory management, multithreading, and performance analysis (WinDbg, WPA, ETW).
  • Telemetry & Data Analysis: Prior exposure to analyzing system logs, performance metrics, cloud data pipelines, or statistical data.
  • Software Quality: Solid grasp of testing methodologies, clean code practices, and git workflows.

Extra Value Additions & Candidate Guidance

Estimated Compensation Expectations

For an early-career Software Engineer (L59/L60 level) at Microsoft India (Hyderabad):

  • Estimated Base Compensation: ₹18,00,000 to ₹26,00,000 INR per annum.
  • Total CTC Package: ₹30,00,000 to ₹45,00,000 INR CTC (inclusive of annual performance cash bonus, initial joining stock grants / RSUs, and healthcare/wellness benefits).
